Staying Safer

Harm Reduction for Grand Daddies Who Choose to Use

Let’s get something clear—this space is about support, not shame.

Not everyone wants to be sober. Some enjoy drinking socially, others engage in chemsex occasionally, and many want to simply feel safer while still enjoying life’s pleasures. Harm reduction means having the tools to stay safer, more aware, and more in control—whatever your choices may be.

This module is about practical safety tips every Grand Daddy, Daddy, and Boi should know.

1. Safer Drinking Guidelines

Many of us grew up in bar culture—celebrating life, community, and identity through drinking. But as we age, our bodies process alcohol differently. The same amount that once felt like fun can now leave us drained, moody, or unwell.

Quick Safer-Drinking Tips:

  • Pace Yourself: No more than 1 standard drink per hour.
  • Hydrate Between Drinks: A glass of water after each alcoholic drink keeps you balanced.
  • Eat First: Never drink on an empty stomach—food helps metabolize alcohol more safely.
  • Set a Limit: Choose your cutoff before the first sip.
  • Know Your Triggers: If you drink more when lonely or upset, pause before starting.

2. Safer Party & Chemsex Practices (If This Applies to You)

If you participate in the party and play (PnP) or chemsex scene, knowledge is power. Harm reduction is key to staying safe, aware, and alive.

Safer Partying Strategies:

  • Plan Your Session: Know who you’ll be with, how long you’ll play, and have a safe exit plan.
  • Never Mix Too Much: Combining alcohol, stimulants, and GHB increases overdose risk.
  • Test Your Substances: Use reagent kits to test for fentanyl or dangerous cuts.
  • Consent is Critical: Always discuss and affirm consent when sober before a session.
  • Buddy System: If playing alone, have a trusted contact you check in with regularly.

3. Overdose Prevention & Naloxone Awareness

With the rise of fentanyl contamination in recreational drugs, overdose prevention is a life-saving skill.

Essentials:

  • Carry Naloxone (Narcan): It can reverse opioid overdoses and is legal to carry in most areas.
  • Learn the Signs of Overdose:
    • Shallow breathing
    • Unresponsive to shaking or calling their name
    • Blue lips or fingertips
  • Don’t Hesitate to Call Emergency Services: Many regions have Good Samaritan laws protecting you from arrest when seeking help.

Free or low-cost naloxone kits are often available from local LGBTQ+ centers or pharmacies.

4. Supportive Resources for Safer Choices

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Here are affirming organizations that offer harm reduction support with zero judgment:
