Remember the Bois During the Holidays

Grand Daddy Life

Holiday support should not move in only one direction.

Grand Daddies may understand loneliness, rejection, and the complicated meaning of family, but younger gay men can experience those same struggles. Some Bois are newly out, rejected by relatives, living far from home, financially unstable, or trying to build a chosen family for the first time.

An invitation from an older gay man can mean more than he realizes.

It may provide a safe meal, a place to relax, a conversation without judgment, or an example of a future that the younger man has never been able to imagine. For someone who has only seen gay life represented as youth, nightlife, and crisis, meeting older gay men who are still creating, loving, traveling, laughing, and building community can be powerful.

That does not mean younger men should be treated as projects, sons, sexual opportunities, or unpaid companions.

Respect matters.

Support should be offered without controlling behavior, hidden expectations, or pressure. A healthy intergenerational connection allows both people to maintain their independence and dignity.

Grand Daddies can help by opening their homes, sharing meals, inviting younger men to community events, offering professional guidance, recommending resources, or simply being available for honest conversation.

Younger men can also contribute. They can help older friends with technology, transportation, new cultural experiences, or connection to changing parts of the community. They can listen to history without assuming the past has nothing to teach them.

The holidays give us an opportunity to create the kind of community many of us were denied.

One table can include men of different ages, races, backgrounds, incomes, beliefs, and experiences. They do not need to agree on everything. They only need to treat one another as people whose presence matters.

Chosen family is not created through slogans.

It is created through repeated acts of welcome, respect, honesty, and care.
